2024

Disaster Relief Funds for the 2024 Noto Peninsula Earthquake (April 30, 2024)

We would like to offer our condolences to those affected by the Noto Peninsula Earthquake that struck on Monday, January 1, 2024. Our Group collected donations to help those affected by the earthquake recover over the period from January 9 to March 31, 2024. The generosity of everyone who donated enabled us to collect a total of 32,803,490 yen in disaster relief funds. In addition to the donations from the public, MatsukiyoCocokara & Co. also provided 7,196,510 yen, so we could donate a total of 40 million yen to Ishikawa Prefecture.

We would like to offer our condolences to those affected by the Hualien Earthquake in Taiwan that struck on Wednesday, April 3, 2024. On Wednesday, April 17, our Group provided 2 million New Taiwan dollars (equivalent to 10 million yen) to Hualien County Magistrate Hsu Chen-Wei to assist with reconstruction through Matsumotokiyoshi (Taiwan) Limited (President and Representative Director Mutsumi Shida), part of our Group, which operates 23 stores (as of the end of March 2024) in Taiwan.

In light of our five materialities, or key issues, are (i) Employee growth, (ii) Consideration of the health of the Earth, (iii) Consideration of medical care to support community life, (iv) Consideration of customers’ health and beauty, and (v) Enhancement of governance and compliance, we carry out a range of initiatives such as supporting improved health for local people, enhancing pharmacy functions, and promoting self-medication. On April 1, 2024, the Osaka Habikino Chuo Store of cocokara fine Pharmacy was recognized by the Japan Dietetic Association (JDA) as a Certified Nutrition Care Station* under the JDA’s Nutrition Care Station* program.

We practice sustainable management, and based on our KPIs and five materialities, or key issues, of (i) Employee growth, (ii) Consideration of the health of the Earth, (iii) Consideration of medical care to support community life, (iv) Consideration of customers’ health and beauty, and (v) Enhancement of governance and compliance, we are striving to create a workplace environment that offers employees a sense of fulfilment from their jobs.
Considering our employees' health management from a management perspective, our strategically implemented Health Management initiatives were highly acclaimed to the extent that MatsukiyoCocokara & Co. was selected jointly by METI and the Nippon Kenko Kaigi as a Certified Health & Productivity Management Outstanding Organizations Recognition Program in the Large Enterprises category for 2024.

We installed vending machines from which ten yen from each beverage purchase is donated to the Social Contribution Project so that employees, business partners and customers can get a feel for contributing and donating to society simply by using the machine. More than 8,300 of these vending machines have already been installed around the country, and 100% of the donations are utilized by The Nippon Foundation Kids Support Fund (Children’s 3rd Places), Special Disaster Reconstruction and Support Fund, The Sea and Japan Project, and HEROs, with none being used to cover indirect expenses. About a year after its establishment, we have donated 734,870 yen to The Nippon Foundation Kids Support Fund (Children’s 3rd Places) which offers social contribution to help children become independent.

In support of The Nippon Foundation's program to provide all children with opportunities and an environment where they can have hope for the future and develop the strength to survive in the coming society, we donated some of the sales of Kao fabrics products totaling 5,500,000 yen to The Nippon Foundation. We are working to promote the health of our employees with a Group Vision of “Making health and beauty more delightful and accessible.” This time, we were evaluated for our provision of health promotion websites and app services that allow employees to manage their own health, and for having held competitive walking events between teams and streaming videos for self-awareness training to maintain and improve health, for example, leading to being selected by the Japan Sports Agency as A Sport Yell Company 2024.

2023

We supported the National Baseball Tournament Former High School Players’ Bring Back That Summer Project, held from November 29 to December 1, 2023, and which ended with great success. MatsukiyoCocokara & Co. cheered on this event, hoping to regain the energy and passion of youth in that summer of 2020, and take the next step in life.

Collection of Donations for Solaputi Kids’ Camp (October 25, 2023)

The Solaputi Kids' Camp in Japan offer outdoor experiences and clinical facilities for about 200,000 children fighting incurable diseases in Japan. Our group, a member of the Japan Association of Chain Drug Stores (JACDS), is collecting donations for the camp construction to support the efforts of the association.

The Solaputi Kids’ Camp Fund raised 6,590,367yen between April 1, 2023 and September 30, 2023.
We will be responsible for the funds we collected from you being delivered via the Japan Association of Chain Drug Stores.

We started recycling, participating in the Medicine Sheet (PTP Sheet*) Residents Participation-Style Recycling Program held in Yokohama, hosted by Daiichi Sankyo Healthcare Co., Ltd. and co-sponsored with TerraCycle, through in-store collections.

Donated Masks, Mask Accessories, Disinfectants, etc. to 60 Child Welfare Support Facilities Nationwide (June 8, 2023)

We support The Nippon Foundation Kids Support Project, and are working on initiatives for social contribution. We have recently donated a total of 77,913 items, including masks, mask accessories, and disinfectants to 60 child welfare support facilities nationwide, from Hokkaido to Okinawa, in order to support third places for children and help combat COVID-19 infections. With the downgrading of COVID-19 to the same Class 5 as the seasonal flu, these items are a vital part of group living, and can be used effectively.

We have set “Employee Growth” as one of the company’s five items of materiality (key issues), and are moving ahead with various initiatives that aim at creating an environment in which our employees can continue to work with vitality while maintaining levels of motivation that facilitate their work.
Considering our employees' health management from a management perspective, our strategically implemented Health Management initiatives were highly acclaimed to the extent that MatsukiyoCocokara & Co. was selected jointly by METI and the Nippon Kenko Kaigi as a Certified Health & Productivity Management Outstanding Organizations Recognition Program in the Large Enterprises category for 2023.

2022

Joined Japan Clean Ocean Material Alliance (CLOMA) and Supplier Ethical Data Exchange (Sedex) (December 8, 2022)

We have joined CLOMA and Sedex. CLOMA, the Japan Clean Ocean Material Alliance, is a group established to accelerate innovation through public-private partnerships and promote the development and introduction of alternatives and the sustainable use of plastic products in order to solve the issues of marine plastic litter. Sedex, the Supplier Ethical Data Exchange, is a membership organization aimed at ethical trade and that supports responsible business practices and responsible sourcing .

We installed a vending machine with which 10 yen from each beverage is donated to the Social Contribution Project so that employees, business partners and customers can get a feel for contributing and donating to society simply by using the machine. More than 8,000 of these vending machines have already been installed around the country, and 100% of the donations are utilized by Children’s 3rd Places, Special Disaster Reconstruction and Support Fund, The Sea and Japan Project, HEROs, Support for Seriously Ill Children and the Nippon Foundation Dream Scholarship charity programs, with none being used to cover indirect expenses. It was decided that we would contribute to Children’s 3rd Places (a child support project) that contributes to society by supporting the future independence of children.

Group Store Energy-Saving Initiatives Adopted to Relieve Pressure on Electricity Demand (July 14, 2022)

Approximately 3,300 group stores spread throughout the country strengthened their initiatives for saving energy in alignment with this summer’s pressure on electricity demand.

Participation in Verification Tests for the JACDS Circular Economy Project (June 14, 2022)

As a member of the Japan Association of Chain Drug Stores (JACDS) SDGs Promotion Committee, the company took part in a project for promoting the creation of a common platform for collecting empty containers from the stores that sold them in order to realize a circular economy, and we began verification tests for collecting empty general-use containers from eleven stores located within the city of Yokohama for a six-month period starting from the end of June.

MatsukiyoCocokara & Co. Operates Booths at Shinagawa Student City (May 22, 2022)

Shinagawa Student City hosted by Junior Achievement Japan was held at the Shinagawa Municipal Shinagawa Gakuen Elementary School. Student City is a compulsory lesson for 2,500 students in municipal elementary schools in Shinagawa Ward, and it is a hands-on program in which children get to work on the booths operated by retailers and various other companies.

Matsumotokiyoshi operated a drugstore, and Cocokarafine operated a prescription pharmacy.

Silver Sponsor Contract Concluded with Japan Deaf Football Association (April 5, 2022)

MatsukiyoCocokara & Co. Group company MCC Management Co., Ltd. concluded a Silver Sponsor contract with the Japan Deaf Football Association for the purpose of promoting a coexistent society in which people with disabilities and able-bodied people can mutually demonstrate their skills, and to spread the word about promoting health through exercise.
MatsukiyoCocokara & Co. will use this opportunity to continue providing support through sports for people with disabilities, promoting a coexistent society, and spreading the word about promoting health through exercise into the future.

Certified as a Sports Yell Company 2022 by the Japan Sports Agency (January 26, 2021)

Based on the Group vision of "Making health and beauty more delightful and accessible," we launched a campaign in which it is possible to accumulate points while recording the number of steps taken during daily activities, dietary details, length of sleeping time and other details with the use of a health management application for smartphones, implemented a promotional program for improving health for employees by having them participate in run and walk corporate competitions, and have continued with a program for supporting individual athletes in our corporate role. These initiatives were highly acclaimed, and we were certified by the Japan Sports Agency as a Sports Yell Company 2022.

MatsukiyoCocokara & Co. and Mediceo Corporation Initiatives for Creating a New Type of Pharmaceutical Distribution Optimization Model to Achieve a Sustainable Society (October 29, 2021)

MatsukiyoCocokara & Co. has established five items of materiality (key issues) as practical steps for achieving sustainable management, and one of these is “Considering the Health of the Earth.” To reduce our environmental impact and maintain the globe’s health, we moved ahead with initiatives not just as the Group but in league with our stakeholders to spread ethical consumerism through our businesses, our shift to eco-friendly PB products, and our contributions to a low-carbon society. Amid the global attention being paid to climate change due to global warming, being aware of and acting on the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) is becoming more and more important within the business activities of companies. We have consequently launched a set of initiatives together with Mediceo Corporation to aggressively reduce CO2 emissions, which are the cause of global warming, and to optimize the distribution of pharmaceuticals and all related work as a part of this. These initiatives will help contribute to achieving a sustainable society by realizing efficient systems of operations for both companies, reducing CO2 emissions, improving productivity, and progressing with workstyle reforms.

Participation in the Japan Sports Agency's Sport in Life Project! Initiatives for Improving Health and Creating Opportunities for Exercising Launched (October 15, 2021)

We took part in the Sport in Life Project promoted by the Japan Sports Agency for the purpose of realizing a society in which as many people as possible can become familiar with sports, and launched initiatives for creating opportunities for exercising in daily life in order to prevent lifestyle diseases and maintain and improve health.

Joint Project between MatsukiyoCocokara & Co. and Kao Corporation
Limited Quantity of the Smart Holder® Made with More than 90% Recycled Plastic Released (October 11, 2021)

We have strengthened our initiatives with Kao Corporation against environmental issues by releasing on sale the Smart Holder®, made with more than 90% recycled plastic (FSC® certified paper used for the outer box), on October 16, 2021, in Matsumotokiyoshi Group and Cocokarafine Group stores throughout the nation (excluding certain stores).
In recent years, the environment is one of the social issues that needs to be solved in consideration of future society, and a wide range of actions are being taken by various industries. Although both companies have established initiatives for this independently up until now, we have now come together to enact joint initiatives in a way that transcends the boundaries between manufacturing and retail industries in the belief that we can encourage as many people as possible to review and change the actions they have followed hereto. Both companies also agree that we wish to consider the future together with our customers, and this hope has resulted in this partnership.

Offices with Optimized Working Environments Opened Under the Keywords of "Communication, Innovation, Community, Sustainability" to Realize Workplaces Linked into the Creation of Corporate Value (October 8, 2021)

Based on the keywords of "Communication, Innovation, Community, Sustainability," the Matsumotokiyoshi Group and Cocokarafine Group have consolidated their corporate cultures and opened offices that aim at the realization of workplaces linked into the creation of corporate value throughout the entire Group by harnessing the vitality that this generates.
Using the opportunities that opening these offices provides, we will move ahead with the optimization of “workplaces” throughout the entire Group.
We will expand on this to incorporate the creation of areas that cater to the diversified needs required in workplaces as part of our quest to establish the most appropriate workstyles for the Group.
